Introduction

Basel is a city in a language-speaking canton in north-west Switzerland on the border of Germany and France. The city is divided into two half cantons: Basel-Land and Basel-City (170 000 inhabitants and agglomeration: 700,000). The city has a river port on the Rhine and if located in the heart of Europe as an important communications hub. Among its many cultural and historic buildings is the oldest university in the country where Erasmus taught.
